12) News Review From Harvard Medical School -- New Gout Drug Promising - Source:A Perspective From The Harvard Medical School
A new drug to treat gout reduced levels of uric acid better than a standard drug, researchers said December 8 in the New England Journal of Medicine. Uric acid accumulates in joints, causing pain. The study did not demonstrate whether the new drug, febuxostat, reduced pain better than the standard drug, allopurinol, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Two to three times as many participants achieved a low level of uric acid with febuxostat as with allopurinol, AP reported.

13) I have developed kidney stones and have ongoing pain recently, and I wonder if it may be related to using Splenda instead of sugar. Are there any studies showing that the development of stones may be related to the use of Splenda? I have heard that it may cause mineralization, but was unclear if this referred to the kidneys. - Source:Bradley Mark Denker, M.D.
Splenda, or sucralose, is a non-caloric artificial sweetener that is several hundred times sweeter than naturally occurring sucrose (table sugar).
